Muhammad bin Qasim was an Umayyad general who conquered the Sindh and Multan regions along the Indus River for the Umayyad Caliphate in 711–712. He was born and raised in the city of Taif (in modern-day Saudi Arabia) to a family of Arab origin. Qasim's conquest of Sindh and southern-most parts of Multan enabled further Muslim conquests on the Indian subcontinent. Qasim's forces overran much of southern Afghanistan as well as the lands of the Ghaznavid Empire, which were centered in what is now north-western Pakistan. The Greek scriba and historian George out that Qasim was "well-versed in Persian and Arabic" and that he "was well acquainted with the customs and manners of the Persians and Arabs." He was known to be a fierce warrior who taught his soldiers to fight for their lives, according to Bhavani, another Muslim historian. Georgics 2:181 by Roman poet Virgil states: "The Greeks called his strength Qašīm; whence come our words, Quaque (i.e. a piece of a broken earthen vessel) and Cuirass." In 711, Qasim led an Umayyad Arab army from Syria to the Sindh, crossing the Syrian Desert and the Indus river. In late 711 Qasim's Umayyad army conquered the Sindh and captured its ruler, Raja Dahir. The Muslim victory was a result of successful planning of battle formations, which frustrated Raja Dahir's elite cavalry. According to one source all four expeditions were successful, however, historian Muhammad Sadiq regards only the first expedition as a success which resulted in establishment of Muslim rule over Sindh. history of subcontinent from 712 to 1947 in urdu pdf free
